Home Remedies for Stinky Hair

Stinky hair is an unpleasant smell originating from the hair and scalp. It is caused by a condition called smelly hair syndrome. It can cause a lot of anxiety for people, so that’s why we put together some home remedies for stinky hair.

People with oily hair are more vulnerable to this condition because the oil picks up toxic wastes, and strong smells quicker than non-oily hair.

1. Sodium Bicarbonate

Baking soda is among the most extensively used home made remedies for foul-smelling hair since it helps neutralize foul odors and decrease oiliness.

What to do?

– Mix one part baking soda in 3 parts water.
– Rinse your hair with water and apply the baking soda paste on your damp hair.
– Leave it on for about 5 minutes and then wash your hair.
– Repeat the process within a week.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is works as a natural hair clarifier and gets rid of product buildup that can contribute to smelly and oily hair and prevents frizzes.

What to do?

– Add one-half cup of organic apple cider vinegar to two cups of distilled water and mix in three drops of essential oil such as lavender or rose.

– Rinse it out with cold water.

You can likewise use apple cider vinegar after the sodium bicarbonate remedy. Do not use it more than two times a week.

3. Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is excellent for your skin and hair. It will leave your hair smelling fresh and clean. Plus, it will promote smooth, shiny hair and fight issues like dandruff and scalp infections.

– Extract the juice pressed from two lemons in a cup of water.

You can also incorporate lemon juice with great smelling oils like rosemary or lavender and leave it in your hair overnight. Do this two or 3 times a week.
Caution: Lemon juice will lighten your hair over a period of time.

4. Tomato Juice

Tomato juice helps eliminate foul odors from your hair. Furthermore, the acidity in tomatoes helps stabilize the pH level in your hair.

What to do?

– Apply fresh tomato juice on your scalp.
– Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes then wash it out.
– Do this one or two times a week.
Warning: Tomato juice is most likely to lighten your hair.

5. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has antimicrobial homes that help cure the problem of stinky hair triggered by scalp infections. It will certainly also reduce scalp acne and dandruff.

What to do?

– Water down a little tea tree oil in water and apply it to your scalp.
– Leave it on for 20 – 30 minutes
– Shampoo it out.
– Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your hair shampoo (2 drops per ounce of hair shampoo) and Shampoo as usual.
